AUTOMATA at GARR Conference 2026 (Pisa, 19-21 May 2026)
The AUTOMATA project was presented at the GARR Conference 2026 in Pisa, Italy, dedicated to “The Shape of Change, Between Digital Ethics and Shared Roots”. This annual event brings together the communities that use and contribute to the GARR Network, the Italian ultra-high-capacity network dedicated to education, research and culture.
On 21 May, Martina Naso (University of Pisa), Nevio Dubbini (Miningful), Arthur Leck, Rémy Chapoulie (University of Bordeaux Montaigne), Gabriele Gattiglia and Claudia Sciuto (University of Pisa) have presented the AI-assisted workflow developed within AUTOMATA for the integration and validation of multisensor archaeometric data.
Combining hyperspectral imaging, portable X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectroscopy, the workflow addresses key challenges related to data heterogeneity, interoperability and quality in distributed analytical contexts. It harmonises spectral and compositional datasets through automated quality assessment, feature extraction and the conditional application of chemometric analyses.
An AI module supports data validation and decision-making, while maintaining a human-in-the-loop approach to ensure interpretative control. Preliminary results on ceramic assemblages show the potential of this approach to improve data consistency, reduce manual processing and enable reliable cross-sensor correlations.
By integrating this workflow within a FAIR-compliant database architecture, AUTOMATA contributes to the development of scalable, transparent and interoperable digital infrastructures for archaeometry.
