AUTOMATA at Archäologisches Kolloquium (Köln University, 14th July)

12 July 2026

On 14 July, AUTOMATA coordinator Gabriele Gattiglia (University of Pisa) will speak at an Archäologisches Kolloquium at the Köln University, titled “Governing the Illusion: Unveiling MAIA and Archaeological AI.”

The talk will try to answer a simple question: what does AI really bring to archaeology, and what should we be careful about?

Starting from the experience of the MAIA COST Action, the presentation will explore how AI is changing archaeological research, from data collection to interpretation, while keeping human expertise at the centre. AUTOMATA will be presented as a practical example of how AI, robotics and multi-sensor digitisation can support archaeological work, while raising important questions about transparency, trust and responsibility.
