Universitat de Barcelona (UB – ES)
The Research Group on Archaeology of Complex Societies and Processes of Social Change) (GRACPE) of the University of Barcelona (UB) is devoted to verifying the hypothetical models concerning sociocultural evolution, the development of complexity, urbanisation, and the origin of institutionalized socio-inequality.
Its unit, Material Culture and Archaeometry UB (ARQUB, GRACPE), performs archaeometric studies (typically XRF, XRD, SEM-EDX and electron microprobe, ICP-OES, ICP-MS) of inorganic materials, mainly ceramics and lithics, using the UB facilities at the Centres Científics i Tecnològics de la UB (CCiTUB). The group is also involved in developing the Digital Humanities Laboratory of the Faculty of Geography and History and is actively working with the 3D scanner technology to document the material record. The team integrates specialists in the new digital approaches to understanding and communicating dynamics of past human activity (including Machine learning techniques).
